£5000 for Skateboard Event
Rhyd y Car Leisure Centre,
Merthyr Tydfil
Last year we supported through the Sport Relief grant scheme, a 5 day Whitsun holiday skateboard event at Rhydycar Leisure Centre in Merthyr Tydfil.
This unique event was an opportunity for young people many of whom are socially and economically disadvantaged, to experience professional displays, benefit from expert tuition, enter competitions and just to be able to use the purpose built Skateboard Park as there are no similar facilities for them in the area.
The event attracted more than 3,000 people and a ‘Graffiti Wall’ was used to provide feedback which will be used to demonstrate the need for a permanent skate park facility in the area. The inspiration behind the project came from the success of a new skate park in nearby Aberbargoed which resulted in a 58% decrease in anti-social behaviour.
